Updates 10 April 2007 A letter from Nick Dear Choose Life Health Ministries supporter: I have just returned from the 12 acre Choose Life Organic Farm in Kenya and am set to return again very soon. We have received a sponsor for our fruit tree planting projects from the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation. They promise to support us with a yearly contribution between $5000 – 10,0000 depending upon their own fundraising efforts for this project. We will be planting 2000 fruit trees in the community of Tana River District each year from our own fruit tree nurseries we have developed on our farm. We are working with 6 new workers. Please see the work force page for further details. I am continuing to develop the land we have and grow our community slowly by slowly. I have realized that this project is growing itself in God’s time rather than my own time. Of course I would prefer to see it grow to 2000 acres and 3000 families overnight. I believe that as we continue to reach out to the local community the support we are needing will come. We have planted 3000 papaya plants, 700 banana plants, 300 pineapples, white sapotes, cherimoyas. We have over 1500 nursery trees of many exotic varieties including durians, mameys, sapodillas, rolineas, atemoyas, custard apples, soursops, etc., and lots of tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, sweet corn, greens, etc. We are starting to harvest now and in 5 years we hope to be almost completely self-sustainable. Since the time of creating our first budget I have been able to realize that continuing to develop this project is much less expensive than I originally thought. We are seeking donations to fund the operations. We need to construct 2 more worker homes and 1 home for those seeking residential health care. Each home will cost approximately $3000. For those that would like to help us we are requesting sponsors for our workers. Each worker needs a financial sponsor at $50 per month. This pays for their entire salary for the full month. In order to fund our operations, we are beginning to invite guests to come for “Health and Fasting Retreats”. For those interested in visiting us and taking a health retreat, please email us at nick@chooselifeministries.org Our Fasting retreats will be a requested donation of $50 per day. All gifts to the ministry are tax-deductible. Sincerely, Dr. Nicholas Tancheff 1 October 2006 The massive project discussed in June has since undergone slight modifications. The project plans also include conservation of the local wildlife of the surrounding forest by establishing a 1000 acre wildlife sanctuary as well as an additional 200 acres to grow cotton, flax, and bamboo for the ministryâ?s local cottage industries. The people involved have agreed to allow for the allocation of 3200 acres in order to establish the project in Ozi location. Refer to the map for additional details of the area involved. Being one of the few Doctors in the area, I began to be bombarded with health care needs from the local peoples. Realizing the project is an enormous task and feeling the constant need to begin assisting the peoples immediately, I purchased 12 acres of land in the area known as Kipini (see map). The following is our list of accomplishments:
Lastly, Zarin Azar M.D. has joined our staff of Doctors. Dr. Zarin will be directing our Medical program while managing our outpatient Medical clinic. Zarin is a licensed Medical Physician from the USA. She is also an expert in nutrition and natural hygiene. For additional biographical information about Dr. Zarin please see the Autobiogrpahies section of our website. www.chooselifeministries.org/autobiography.htmlSincerely, Dr. Nicholas Tancheff 18 June 2006 I am writing to you from Kenya where Choose Life Health Ministries will begin its work to eliminate disease and restore health while creating self sufficiency among the people we are serving. The proposal includes programs of nutrition, education and the implementation of building and farming to create a community for those who live here. The people here are very much in need of assistance. HIV and AIDS are serious problems here in Kenya particularly on the Coast where the people are the most poor, and they do not have access to proper health care and nutrition. Our program will address both of these needs and will provide the education they will need to maintain themselves and their families. We are working closely with the government to obtain land in an area along the Tana River for this program. Our agent Simon K Ngugi, a land surveyor from this area has mapped for us 2000 acres along the coast and both sides of the river that enters the undeveloped, pristine and secluded coastline of the Indian Ocean (see map). Choose Life is also proposing an additional 1000 acres of land in order to protect the wildlife in its own Wildlife Sanctuary. We are requesting $10 million (US) to implement the program by first purchasing the land and the tools to build shelters, and cultivate the land. The land has been held bythe government to conserve this lush fertile land from pollution and all varieties of business ventures that would not benefit the people surrounding the land. We are encouraged because the government is supportive of our plan, and the Honorable Member ofParliament for the area, Mr. Mungatana, has undertaken the effort to pass our proposal to benefit the people. The land is almost in our hands, but we need the finances to finalize the purchase. The people here are suffering from depression and many have turned to alcohol and drugs to alleviate their depression. The greatest obstacle however is that they have a diminished sense of their own power to change their lives and thus they live without hope. Choose Lifeâ?s program will help promote a greater sense of empowerment as the people realize the land is rich and will sustain them. Please support this worthwhile and humane work for the people of Kenya. Sincerely, Dr. Nicholas Tancheff |
